Cafe Transilvania brings Romanian takeout with a ‘bite’

On opening day at Cafe Transilvania in Fairfield Tuesday, one customer drove nearly three hours from the Boston area, for the takeout fare. That’s a bit much to expect, but then, Transilvania’s owners say the new place is the only Romanian restaurant in Connecticut.

Certainly it’s the only Transylvanian establishment with traditional dishes such as stuffed cabbage, Hungarian paprikash chicken and Romanian skinless sausage known as mici — sharing a menu with burgers, fries, eggs all day and honey crisp apple salad.

Owners Aline and Christian Caldarariu, who met while working in the hospitality industry in Bermuda and immigrated to the United States in 2013, have rolled out the Dracula culture. That includes the slogan, “Come in for a bite” and a giant image of the 13th century Bran Castle, known as Dracula’s castle based on the myth created by Bram Stoker.
